Before You Apply
Space manufacturing has its own rhythms and unwritten rules. Here's the inside track.
AWS welding certs, IPC soldering certs, NDT qualifications, and A&P licenses are the credentials that matter — each earnable at a community college or trade school in months, for a fraction of a degree's cost.
The famous companies get thousands of applicants; the machine shop making their valves gets dozens. Search for AS9100-certified suppliers near you — same industry, same hardware, far less competition.
Aerospace runs on the AS9100 quality standard. Any experience working under it — even at a tiny shop — signals you understand traceability and documentation, and transfers to every employer in this sector.
Factories run around the clock when launch schedules press, and evening/night shifts carry pay differentials. Taking second shift early in your career means more money and faster hiring.
If you've machined, welded, assembled, or inspected in automotive or aviation, you already have the skills — space just adds tighter tolerances and more paperwork. Lead with your hands-on hours.
Many companies offer tuition reimbursement, and technicians who earn engineering degrees part-time get promoted from within. Five years on the floor plus a degree beats a degree alone — you'll know how things are actually built.
