Research experience beats GPA

A semester in a professor's lab, a co-authored poster, or an REU summer program outweighs a perfect transcript. If you're a student, email professors and ask to help โ€” that's genuinely how it starts.

REUs are the paid front door

NSF-funded Research Experiences for Undergraduates pay you to spend a summer doing real research at labs nationwide. They're competitive but designed for students without connections โ€” apply to many.

Soft money is a real thing

Many research jobs are funded by grants with end dates, meaning positions can be less permanent than they look. Ask how a role is funded in interviews โ€” "hard money" civil service and institute roles are the stable ones.

Support roles outnumber scientists

For every PI on a mission there are analysts, engineers, planners, admins, and communicators. If you love the science but not the PhD path, target these roles โ€” they watch the same launches from the same room.
